LIFESTYLE ACTIVITIES ON THE RISE

NWSS’ lifestyle activities are slowly increasing and becoming more consistent.

Michael, who lives in one of our shared homes is looking forward to regular visits to Williams Run Riding School.

The following is an excerpt from a report written by Service Coordinator, Nick Higgins with some photos he took on the first visit.

Today we visited a Horse Stables called Williams Run in Lapoinya. This is just 5 minutes up the road from 119 Calder Rd.

Williams Run is a horse-riding training stables that also provides therapeutic access to the ponies and horses.

This visit was a trial, to gauge Michael’s reaction to the environment.
Jess Cann and I were there all the time as was the owner, Virginia Turner.

Michael was anxious and reluctant in the car travelling to the stables.

However, as soon as he was assisted onto his wheelchair and he became aware of the surroundings, the change was remarkable. He calmed down and was looking all around him. All anxious activity such as arm waving disappeared.

We took Michael to meet one of the ponies, who came over and sniffed at Michael’s hand. He did not withdraw, nor become agitated, quite the opposite, he relaxed, and we were sure he was smiling.

He took himself down from his wheelchair and moved himself around the area, looking and listening, absorbing the peace and quiet.

Once settled, Michael remained in one area, occasionally rolling onto his back, but mostly upright looking around. The horse just grazed nearby.”

This is the calmest and happiest I have seen him for a long time.

The owners were very impressed with Michael and would like him to come up whenever he likes.
